Stuff...
...As I was pondering over things for Remembrance Day, it occured to me that my generation in our family is the one with the least amount of family members in the military, with just one of my cousins.

A few weeks back, the plant had an unannounced food safety compliance inspection by one of our corporate bigwigs. We failed pretty hardcore, managing a 57%. Not even a week later, we had a Food Inspection Agency in to do their annual review. We knew when they'd be there, and had a chance to clean up. We scored 905 out of 1000 (Yes, they all use different scoring methods!)
A memo has popped up that we'll be swapping companies, and going to a more intense Audit, as well as it always being unannounced.
Why do I have a feeling we'll start failing these pretty badly, pretty quickly? Oh yeah, it's because 99% of the people working there don't give a flying f*ck about their jobs...

I got attacked by a skid of boxes yesterday. I was palletizing, and the guy running the pallet jack hit the skid he was picking up wrong. I just happened to be stretched out over the conveyor behind it, and caught a bunch of boxes falling onto me. They knocked me to my knees, sprawling over the conveyor. They hit the back of my head, and my back. I was a bit sore today, but am pretty much ok.

I decided, after being beaten up by boxes, that I'd go have a burger at my preferred adult entertainment establishment. By complete and total random crazy happenstance, the dancer that Meg adored when I took her there YEARS ago was there, doing a number. A bit shocked, I talked to her a bit after her show. She comes through Calgary every 6 months or so, as she likes it here. I got another fridge magnet from her, so we'd have two. :)

We had a donation system set up for a local charity. The person who won the contest gets a day off with pay. When I saw the person who DID win it, I guffawed, and naoted that they might as well have her come in and work anyhow, since it's not like she ever actually WORKS at work. She's been there for several years, and (apparently) has been on modified/light duty for most of that. But since she's a Shop Steward, getting rid of her is damn near impossible. Most co-workers and I had a good snicker over that.

I have long said that the last thing you want to do if you can at all help it, is show your boss that you aren't needed. That the company/job can get along just fine without you. While I meant it more to folks in my level of work, it does pretty much apply across the board. Case in point...
Someone I know who is a store manager just came back from a 4 month 'sabbatical' (his term for it). He got back on Monday. He was fired on Tuesday. Now, while I doubt that his going out of the country for 4 months is the SOLE reason for his dismissal, I'd be shocked if it didn't figure a lot into the reason for it.
No one is ever as indispensable as they think they are. Stuff like this brings to mind the story of the guy I worked with who was with the company for 15 years...but liked to show up late. He did so one morning, and was told he could go home, and that he wouldn't be needed back anymore. I hear a lot about this kind of thing these days.
I don't know why folks think that they can disrespect their employers so much these days, but your actions do have consequences.
The temp we had for the first part of this week is also gone. He was looking to be hired, and as we do happen to have a job that he could have been recommended into, he couldn't have made a worse impression.
I had never seen the guy before, and at 6am on Monday morning, I'm helping him palletize...and being treated to a ranting litany of how he was 'treated' the day before at work, when I wasn't there. He had no idea who I was, or what position I held in the company, just rantrantrant.a
Then he refused to go on a lunch break (for which we don't get paid) by saying "I don't do lunch breaks." He also didn't like the timing of the breaks (I agree 'lunch' at 10am is a bit odd, but hey, we start early...)
Then he decided the temp company he worked for wasn't paying him enough, and he'd only do "60 dollars a day worth of work." I couldn't believe my ears. And then my eyes, as he proceeded to palletize just one (of 3) lines, leaving the other two and refusing to have anything to do with them.
Oh, yeah...so definitely going to recommend him to a job. He's worse than the lazy shit we just got rid of!
I don't get people these days. Thinking that they are owed $20/hour jobs where they don't have to actually do any work in. *headshake*

Meg and I were driving the other day, and having a difficult conversation. Rise Against came on her IPod, singing Swing Life Away. We both stopped and listened. There's a line in there that goes like this:
"Am I loud and clear or am I breaking up?
Am I still your charm or am I just bad luck?
Are we getting closer, or are we just getting more lost?
I'll show you mine if you show me yours first,
Let's compare scars I'll tell you whose is worse."
Meg and I stopped talking. When next I did, I'd had an idea. A concept.
"What would life be like if you really could do that? If you could...magically form in front of you a representation of your heart. Scars and all. What if you could let someone see the damage they've done to you?"
We talked this concept around a bit. Mostly wondering how life would be different if folks could see how their actions affected other folks. Wondering if folks who had scarred hearts would be looked for, or shunned. Wondering if folks would want someone with a nearly unblemished heart...or if they would be shunned, as folks feared being the first big scar. How would friends and lovers treat each other, if they knew they were adding scars to their loved one's heart. Would any of it make a difference? Would it change how anyone cared? Would it make a difference in the world at all?
