    I'm not a number, Im a man!

    Anyone else like weird Sci-Fi? This Sunday on AMC they are showing their remake of The Prisoner. Way to go AMC for not advertising this. Turns out the remake stars the dude that played Jesus (Jim Cavesil) and Sir Ian Mcclellan.

    So I know what I'm recording Sunday night.

    Remember Kelo v. City of New London?
    Remember Kelo v. City of New London, where the city of New London, Connecticut decided to use eminent domain to take a neighbourhood and give it to a real-estate developer? It went to the Supreme Court in 2005, and the Supreme Court ruled this was just fine. I railed about it.

    Anyway, "four years after that decision gave Susette Kelo's land to private developers for a project including a hotel and offices intended to enhance Pfizer Inc.'s nearby corporate facility, the pharmaceutical giant has announced it will close its research and development headquarters in New London, Connecticut." The former neighbourhood is still a bulldozed wreck. Awesome, is it not?

    Today at CrossFit:

    Something a little different. Overhead squat 45k, do it 75 times. Break it down into sets. Try to get as few sets as possible. Rest between sets as needed. So do 15 squats 5 times, or 25 squats three times, etc, etc.

    I figured I'd do it in three sets of 25 each. Nope. Tougher than it looks. 20-20-20-15.

    Dropping the bar on my head didnt help either. Ow.

    On a side note, the warmup every class is 5 pullups, 10 pushups, 15 squats 3x. Simple and, nowadays, pretty quick. Gets everything warmed up. Well, the pushups arent a big deal now, I can bat those out pretty quick. (And excellent plank-rigid form too, I might add) However, for giggles I decided to try the one-arm pushups. Previously, just screwing around, I could do one or two but hadnt really tried them in a few years. Yeah, well, I can do quite a bit more now. Surprise.

    Lumix LX3 first impressions
    • Flash synch at any shutter speed. Fill flash at f2.8 and 1/2000s outside -- no problem. Should work fine with radio flash triggers...though at that point might as well carry a real camera.
    • Pretty good AF. Illuminator works as designed -- unlike the missing one of 5D2.
    • It is tiny. 550EX flash put on top of it for a test is about three times as big as the camera.
    • The movie mode is absolutely useless because focus is fixed at the moment filming begins.
    • Though lacking eye-level viewfinder, it can be held steadily through the used of tensioned strap.
    • The interface isn't the simplest nor the most complex. Fortunately, the buried menu items are for set-up only, while the most commonly used features have direct controls.
    • Sensor noise is minimal at ISO 80 and acceptable at ISO 400.
    I realized that the single most profitable image license I sold was for a picture made with a 1MP P&S camera (photo was taken in 1999 and licensed in 2009). So having some camera on me at all times ought to pay for itself. It's a direct analog of a P32 being used as a backup for a Glock 17 (Canon 5D2). I would have preferred Panasonic GF1 but for the lack of availability.

    Connecticut cunning plan for revitalization: more vacant lots
    Remember how eminent domain justified the Kelo decision based on economic growth? Yeah, about that:
    Now, four years after that decision gave Susette Kelo's land to private developers for a project including a hotel and offices intended to enhance Pfizer Inc.'s nearby corporate facility, the pharmaceutical giant has announced it will close its research and development headquarters in New London, Connecticut.

    The aftermath of Kelo is the latest example of the futility of using eminent domain as corporate welfare. While Ms. Kelo and her neighbors lost their homes, the city and the state spent some $78 million to bulldoze private property for high-end condos and other "desirable" elements. Instead, the wrecked and condemned neighborhood still stands vacant, without any of the touted tax benefits or job creation.
    Oops.

    Movie review: Africa Addio (Goodbye Africa)
    Fascinating film. It's a mix of documentary and propaganda, but really puts visuals in your mind. How do 5,000 dead Zanzibar Arabs look. How do 50 dead elephants look. What did a Kenyan farm look like before the British left. I very much recommend this film. It pulls no punches and really illustrates the saying "Africa wins again".

    Ping-Ping Turns 14
    Today is Ping-Ping's 14th birthday....it's amazing to think that just a month and a half ago, I was still worried we might not get her in time...for today was the cut-off day after which she would have been too old to adopt.

    Now she's been with us just a day or so over a month. While it has not yet reached the point where we feel as if she had always been part of the family, that day grows closer. I am particularly grateful for how well she gets along with her brothers. She is developing a relationship with each one, and all three are very pleased with her.

    What a sweetie she is, and how lucky we are!

    Half Of Detroit Council Packs Heat
    Charles Pugh, Kwame Kenyatta, James Tate and Gary Brown have said Tuesday that they are usually armed.

    "I wish we lived in a community where we didn't need a gun," said Brown.

    The Rev. Andre Spivey, pastor of St. Paul AME, said he soon plans to get his concealed weapon permit.

    Spivey said he's applying for a concealed weapon permit because church members have been urging him to get one for years.

    Pugh said he got a concealed weapon permit in December 2007 before he entered politics because he had received death threats.

    "The reality is there are people who are homophobic and they are not happy with me as an elected person who happens to be gay," said soon-to-be Council President Pugh.

    Kenyatta said he packs heat because council members sometimes must ward off irate citizens.

    unredeemable bastard
    Rhode Island governor Donald Carcieri (R) vetoed a bill that would allow same-sex couples control over their partners' funerals, calling it an assault on marriage, or, his words, part of "a disturbing trend over the past few years of the incremental erosion of the principles surrounding traditional marriage."

    I want to punch Mr. Carcieri in the face until he stops. That's not a treat to do so; just a desire.

    Dan and I went to see The Box today, both of us thinking it looked like kind of a nifty psychological thriller movie. A remake of a Twilight Zone episode, can't be too bad, right?

    Wrong. All the good parts were in the trailer. I had to wake Dan up about a third of the way through, and it went all Spielbergian at the halfway point and never returned to being an even remotely okay movie again.

    Also, Cameron Diaz has a very striking shape, and I love her character's clothing style in the movie, but her face looks way older than the rest of her.

    Stuff...
    ...As I was pondering over things for Remembrance Day, it occured to me that my generation in our family is the one with the least amount of family members in the military, with just one of my cousins.

    ~~~
    A few weeks back, the plant had an unannounced food safety compliance inspection by one of our corporate bigwigs. We failed pretty hardcore, managing a 57%. Not even a week later, we had a Food Inspection Agency in to do their annual review. We knew when they'd be there, and had a chance to clean up. We scored 905 out of 1000 (Yes, they all use different scoring methods!)
    A memo has popped up that we'll be swapping companies, and going to a more intense Audit, as well as it always being unannounced.
    Why do I have a feeling we'll start failing these pretty badly, pretty quickly? Oh yeah, it's because 99% of the people working there don't give a flying f*ck about their jobs...
    ~~~
    I got attacked by a skid of boxes yesterday. I was palletizing, and the guy running the pallet jack hit the skid he was picking up wrong. I just happened to be stretched out over the conveyor behind it, and caught a bunch of boxes falling onto me. They knocked me to my knees, sprawling over the conveyor. They hit the back of my head, and my back. I was a bit sore today, but am pretty much ok.

    ~~~
    I decided, after being beaten up by boxes, that I'd go have a burger at my preferred adult entertainment establishment. By complete and total random crazy happenstance, the dancer that Meg adored when I took her there YEARS ago was there, doing a number. A bit shocked, I talked to her a bit after her show. She comes through Calgary every 6 months or so, as she likes it here. I got another fridge magnet from her, so we'd have two. :)
    ~~~
    We had a donation system set up for a local charity. The person who won the contest gets a day off with pay. When I saw the person who DID win it, I guffawed, and naoted that they might as well have her come in and work anyhow, since it's not like she ever actually WORKS at work. She's been there for several years, and (apparently) has been on modified/light duty for most of that. But since she's a Shop Steward, getting rid of her is damn near impossible. Most co-workers and I had a good snicker over that.

    ~~~
    I have long said that the last thing you want to do if you can at all help it, is show your boss that you aren't needed. That the company/job can get along just fine without you. While I meant it more to folks in my level of work, it does pretty much apply across the board. Case in point...
    Someone I know who is a store manager just came back from a 4 month 'sabbatical' (his term for it). He got back on Monday. He was fired on Tuesday. Now, while I doubt that his going out of the country for 4 months is the SOLE reason for his dismissal, I'd be shocked if it didn't figure a lot into the reason for it.
    No one is ever as indispensable as they think they are. Stuff like this brings to mind the story of the guy I worked with who was with the company for 15 years...but liked to show up late. He did so one morning, and was told he could go home, and that he wouldn't be needed back anymore. I hear a lot about this kind of thing these days.
    I don't know why folks think that they can disrespect their employers so much these days, but your actions do have consequences.
    The temp we had for the first part of this week is also gone. He was looking to be hired, and as we do happen to have a job that he could have been recommended into, he couldn't have made a worse impression.
    I had never seen the guy before, and at 6am on Monday morning, I'm helping him palletize...and being treated to a ranting litany of how he was 'treated' the day before at work, when I wasn't there. He had no idea who I was, or what position I held in the company, just rantrantrant.a
    Then he refused to go on a lunch break (for which we don't get paid) by saying "I don't do lunch breaks." He also didn't like the timing of the breaks (I agree 'lunch' at 10am is a bit odd, but hey, we start early...)
    Then he decided the temp company he worked for wasn't paying him enough, and he'd only do "60 dollars a day worth of work." I couldn't believe my ears. And then my eyes, as he proceeded to palletize just one (of 3) lines, leaving the other two and refusing to have anything to do with them.
    Oh, yeah...so definitely going to recommend him to a job. He's worse than the lazy shit we just got rid of!
    I don't get people these days. Thinking that they are owed $20/hour jobs where they don't have to actually do any work in. *headshake*
    ~~~
    Meg and I were driving the other day, and having a difficult conversation. Rise Against came on her IPod, singing Swing Life Away. We both stopped and listened. There's a line in there that goes like this:

    "Am I loud and clear or am I breaking up?
    Am I still your charm or am I just bad luck?
    Are we getting closer, or are we just getting more lost?

    I'll show you mine if you show me yours first,
    Let's compare scars I'll tell you whose is worse."

    Meg and I stopped talking. When next I did, I'd had an idea. A concept.

    "What would life be like if you really could do that? If you could...magically form in front of you a representation of your heart. Scars and all. What if you could let someone see the damage they've done to you?"

    We talked this concept around a bit. Mostly wondering how life would be different if folks could see how their actions affected other folks. Wondering if folks who had scarred hearts would be looked for, or shunned. Wondering if folks would want someone with a nearly unblemished heart...or if they would be shunned, as folks feared being the first big scar. How would friends and lovers treat each other, if they knew they were adding scars to their loved one's heart. Would any of it make a difference? Would it change how anyone cared? Would it make a difference in the world at all?

    Yesterday at the range, a guy asked if I was law enforcement. I just stuck out my jaw, gave him my most steely glare, and replied, "Why - do you have something to hide?" Too bad I can't keep a straight face very long ;p

    On my walk today, a motorcyclist had stopped to check his mail. We exchanged hellos and he commented that he'd seen me out walking every day for years(!), and figured I must be in very good shape and wear out a lot of shoes. I allowed that I do wear out a lot of shoes ;p
