Star Trek
Just my opinion of the new movie:

It was good. I really, REALLY liked it. It was, in my eyes, how I remember the old show being. Filled with action and colorful characters and weird technology and phasers. Sadly, when I go watch the first series I can't even get through a full episode. It was nice of them to piece together a movie which reflected my memories of the series. Also, McCoy fucking rocked. I know lots of people are going to hate the movie. Too bad for them.

If you do not turn off your brain when it comes to time travel and paradox it will most likely explode. I have my own theory of "time travel" in Sci Fi and it is very open to the sort of weirdness which permeates this film.

I don't get excited about films very often, but I'm going to see this one in a theater.

I really hope you like it. I can easily see how someone who loves Star Trek would hate the movie. I pity those people... lol

I really love Star Trek (I own perhaps thirty books), but I am also very open minded, I think that was the whole point of the series.

I've seen many trailers (and I agree, they casted McCoy PERFECTLY!), and I think this is going to rock my world.

I am a huge Trek fan and loved the new movie. I have also heard from many Trekkers that also loved it. In fact, I haven't heard from someone yet who did not like it.

I had minor complaints, but any fan will find things to nitpick. That aside, it was too much fun not too enjoy.

I agree, The McCoy actor nailed it. Heck, might actually improved on the character.

I'm a die-hard Trekkie and I loved it. As long as you're able to let go of a few canon issues, you'll like it. The casting is beyond brilliant.

The "new" characters were great. I look forward to seeing them in future movies.

Spoilers!

I don't like time travel as a dramatic device. Vulcan exploded? 6 billion people dead? So what? Spock (or somebody else) will just go back in time and prevent it from happening.

Yeah i am not a fan of time travel at all. But it's a big part of Star Trek so I just swallowed. Ugh.

this was my main objection as well, I expected them to just travel back and prevent the destruction of romulus, thus eliminating the timeline. I hate that with a passion. Instead, they've just created a branching timeline that allows them complete latitude with the StarTrek universe. This is a good thing.

Love McCoy (though I kept waiting for him to start torturing someone, thanks to 24)

But I just can't get behind Sylar/Spock. He just comes across as too intense, even when he's supposed to be calm and logical. Not really angry, just intense.

Also, I know ST has always taken liberties with the science (Heisenberg compensator anyone?) However, the basis of the destruction of Romulus... wow did they ignore a lot.

Red matter? Really? Really?

"Red matter? Really? Really?"

That was, verbatim, what my friend and I said in the theater.

And I loved Spock. Thought he was basically flawless. ::grin::

don't recall them saying destroy the galaxy, but destroy Romulus.

However I'm pretty sure they're ignoring the fact that any star close enough to destroy a planet by going nova would also be destroyed when that star was removed. Seeing as the planet would have to be orbiting it.

They left out some important facts in the production version. I have the prequel graphic novel which explained what was going on alot better. I think they changed things, though, so the prequel no longer lines up correctly. Which was dumb. It only would have taken a couple more minutes of a mind meld to explain the danger and Spock's relationship with Nero to a much more satisfying degree.

so once again we wait for the directors cut on DVD?

I'm not sure. I wonder if they actually tweaked the entire back story slightly after they released the information needed for the graphic novel. Which would be lame but not really surprising. I hope the director's cut is different and matches what I read beforehand.

I pondered the physics.

And then I thought "Scotty!!!!!"

And all the nasty brow wrinkling went away.

LOVE Scott, LOVE McCoy, LOVE Spock, LOVE Uhura.

Good with Sulu, Okay with Kirk, meh on Chekov.

But....

SCOTTY!!!!!

Yeah, life is good.

(Actors have all signed for two more movies. My geek, it is *so* getting on!!!!)

My only issue with the use of time travel is their "fogetting" about the Star Fleet "time division" (way in the future). They were in Voyager, DS9, and even Enterprise. The instant Nero appeared, a time ship should have shown up to put his ass back where it belongs. And the same for Spock Prime. (Would've made for a real dull movie, tho.)

Nero's destruction of the Kelvin was enough to dramatically alter the future. Kirk was to be a very important player in history -- instead he becomes a troublemaker and basically only joins star fleet on a bet/dare. From there, history manages to more or less swerve back onto the tracks -- minus millions of Vulcans.

It's possible that the time incursion was so quick and, overall, didn't adjust the future outcome So much that it wasn't wasn't worth the risk to the time line to try and "fix".

that kind of goes out the window with the death of Spocks mom and the Planet of Vulcan.
But maybe the time police see this AS the rightful future in This time-line.

would have been nice if they included a failed attempt by the future to Try and fix it in the few minutes the had though.

Dear Nero,

If you love Romulus so much, why in the 20 some-odd years that you've been puttering around the past have you done NOTHING to save it? You know... give the Romulans future tech, warn them of the supernova that's going to kill them all, STOP the supernova with your gross overkill supply of "red matter" (which, admittedly, you just got)? Seriously, have the folks on your ship really been sitting around for two decades without thinking, "Hey, you know what would really kick the Federation's asses? What if the Tal Shi'ar got their hands on two ships from the future? Our warbirds would be unstoppable!" No, you're going to set off to one by one implode the Federation planets. Really? No, dude... really?

One of my friends started complaining about how the new movie didn't have the classic Star Trek feel, whereupon the rest of us commented, "You're thinking about it too much."

The script writers had the phrase “Kirk is choked” on a macro key.

They also appear to have had "Kirk falls off a cliff and barely hangs on." on macro too. :)
