Fuck
My PC has been mortally wounded. The power supply is going so it turns off randomly and then won't turn back on, or stay on I should say, unless I wait a good long time. Then it just goes for about 25 minutes and repeats. So I unplugged it and opened it up to yank the power supply. No can do. It's a fucking Alienware and the frame literally wraps around the lines. i need to look up on line if there is a way to do it. Though buying a new box might be easier in the end. Until I figure something out, though, I am out of games and fun. Boo. Fucking annoying. Also, I have no clue how to get the hard drive out. It's in there in some crazy ass way I can't comprehend with my puny mortal brain. FUCK.

Bring it on up when you visit. We'll get that bastard apart. It'll be in pieces by the time you go home.

yes, it will come out. Everything in there will come out. it's just not a simple "remove this 'jesus screw' and it falls out." In that respect, it's like working on a laptop.

My money says the fan(s) are bad. You can temporarily hang a fan to the outside of the power supply/case to pull air through it -- I have a machine setup like that right now as I'm too lazy to pull the PS and replace the fan inside it. Of course, you'll need a fan :-)

If you don't have any local techies (like that could happen), I'm only a 2-3hr drive away :-)

Ok, Google says 4hr 39min (270 miles) But I drive that far (284mi) to go home in about 3hrs.

Ouch, that stinks! I had somewhat similar problems this weekend. I decided it might be a fun weekend project to build a new computer, so I got the motherboard/processor/RAM/graphics, etc., and started building it Saturday. By Saturday night it was all together and I plugged it in to make sure it would boot okay and recognize everything. Then Sunday morning I cannibalized my old computer for the hard drive and installed that and started to load Windows XP, only to find it would crash 20 minutes into the install. I spent the rest of the day ruling out memory errors and hard drive errors and whatever else I could think of, now I think it is a driver issue. Windows won't load without the driver and won't allow me to install the driver except using a floppy drive, which I didn't actually bother to put into my new computer. :)

So not only did I spend a weekend building a computer that doesn't work, but I tore apart my old computer that did work somewhere along the way. Not my best planning ever. :(

Regarding your problem (which, after all, is what this post was about until I started rambling on!), I hope you are able to work it out. I have never bought Alienware but I would certainly hope that they make it possible (if not particularly easy) to get the power supply out. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

I had to cut the power supply out. But I was able to install the new one, which has a fan on it and is nicer than the old one, so everything seems pretty good right now. :)
